I have loved horses all my life. As a little girl, I rode Black Pete, our ranch horse at our 1000 acre Raetzsch Ranch in the Sand Hills near Seguin. I don’t know how old I was when I started riding but in this picture I look pretty young. My cousins and others who rode Black Pete said he would try to brush them off under trees but he never did that to me. I think he liked me. Any chance I’d get to be on a horse I would. Misty of Chincoteague, Black Beauty and Album of Horses were my favorite books.
The first horse I really owned was Shamar, a registered Half Arabian whom my parents bought for me in 1978 when he was 6 years old. His registered name was Shanaraf being of Raffles bloodlines. He was actually 3/4 Arabian blood with some thoroughbred and quarter-horse thrown in for good measure. Shamar, a 14.3 hand flea bitten gray (white with some tiny red spots or “flea bites”), was gentle and kind but spirited with a lot of energy. I taught him to side pass, shoulder in, drive and other movements. He knew his leads and would run like the wind if you wanted him to. The gray gelding above and below was “Blackie” a sweet, Welsh Mountain pony type ranch horse we had. Even though he looks white in the photos, a gray horse is born dark and lightens with age.
Of course I have always loved all animals too. Dogs, cats, fish, birds, turtles, tortoises are among some of the pets I have had. I guess I just feel my house is not a home without at least a cat and dog or two.
I love to go see horse events and ride whenever I can. On vacation, there is nothing I like better than riding in a new area or going to see some horses. In Wyoming I rode and well as went to see a wild Mustang herd.
